National Recruitment Federation Calls on the Public not the Government to Lead Us Out of Recession

14.08.06

We attended our annual conference and were pleasantly surprised with some different news than that of the doom and gloom we are always reading about. Please find below the main comments made from the National Recruitment Federation. We know our candidates and our clients are facing challenging times and we want to work with you through this time...

24th April 2009 – for immediate release:

At its Annual Conference 2009 in Citywest Hotel yesterday, the National Recruitment Federation made a call on the public (employers, employees and the unemployed) to forget waiting on the Social Partnership to help get the economy off its knees and to start making a difference themselves .

The Federation denounced the many months of waiting and hoping for the Social Partners to come to some form of agreement and a collaborative strategy that may help to herald signs of a untied goal for recovery, with the result being nothing but time wasted arguing and blaming each other for the country’s problems.  Therefore the NRF felt its time to just get on with doing what we can as a nation to move things forward.

With the title of the conference – Facing the Future with Ease: Education, Enterprise & Employment – the federation also called for a new outlook of positivity that dwells more on what can be done as opposed to what’s gone wrong.

Said NRF President, Mr Frank Collins, Yes we know there are thousands losing their jobs and thousands more quite likely but the fact is there ARE people getting jobs and people coming off the live register. The wheels of enterprise have clearly slowed down but they have not ground to a halt.”

He continued , “ With 13,000 people coming off the dole in January and February and 400 people getting permanence jobs and another 550, temporary jobs through NRF member agencies in one week in March, the figures hold the key to some hope. There is a natural churn in employment and business bubbling under the surface with people moving jobs, retiring, going on maternity leave etc.  Not only is there a churn, some businesses are reporting a change in outlook towards the positive and that is what we need to focus on and be inspired by.  We are not looking through rose-tinted glasses; we are aware the situation is bad but let’s look at our options and move forward”.

Sharing some of the Federations advice on what options existed for the thousands of unemployed he said, “ Those without jobs need to get motivated enough to look at how they can spend this time evaluating and improving their employment security with their CV’s and interview techniques and crucially, up-skilling themselves so that when the inevitable recovery comes around, they will be more employable than ever
